Gatun Lake, Panama

At its completion in 1913, Gatun Lake was the largest man-made lake in the world. While it no longer possesses that distinction, the lake remains an essential component of the Panama Canal, acting as a water reserve that allows the canal to operate during Panama's dry season. Numerous tropical islands were formed by the hills submerged during the lake's creation, and the largest of these, Barro Colorado Island, is home to the Smithsonian Tropical Research Institute, dedicated to uncovering the scientific mysteries of the rainforest.
